The Danube Delta is Europe’s largest wetland sanctuary—a vast network of reeded waterways and shallow lakes where birdlife gathers in extraordinary numbers. In peak August, the delta is alive with activity: Great White and Dalmatian Pelicans cover the open water, White-tailed Eagles scan the channels, and species like Little Bitterns, Grebes, Whiskered Terns, and Kingfishers work the reeded edges.
I designed this 7-day expedition specifically for a small group of five to six photographers. To give us an unbeatable advantage in the field, we base ourselves entirely on the water—sleeping aboard a private floating hotel moored deep within the delta. Our daily sessions are conducted from custom, low-profile photo boats equipped with silent electric motors. This allows us to glide into narrow channels without engine noise or vibration, offering uncrowded, water-level shooting positions for dedicated one-to-one tuition.
Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to the Delta
Pick-up at Bucharest Airport (OTP), followed by a private transfer to the delta edge. We board our private floating hotel, settle into our cabins, and enjoy a group welcome dinner as we moor deep within the reserve.
Days 2–6: Electric Boat Sessions & Floating Hotel Base
Two dedicated electric boat sessions each day to capture peak light and activity:
Morning (05:30 – 11:00): Dawn boat session targeting pelicans, terns, grebes, and perched White-tailed Eagles on calm lakes and side-channels.
Midday (11:00 – 16:30): Lunch, rest during harsh light, and optional image editing feedback aboard our floating hotel.
Evening (16:30 – 20:30): Late afternoon boat session tracking Little Bitterns, Squacco Herons, and Kingfishers through the reed beds until dusk.
Day 7: Departure
A final group breakfast on board before our private transfer returns us to Bucharest Airport (OTP) for flights home.

Accommodation: 6 nights aboard our private floating hotel moored deep inside the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (private cabins, with no single supplement charges).
Electric Boat Logistics: Daily field sessions on a custom, low-profile photo boat equipped with a silent electric motor for close-quarters, zero-vibration photography.
Field Tuition: Full one-to-one photographic guidance from me throughout the trip, covering camera settings, exposure management on light plumage, and flight tracking, plus voluntary image editing reviews.
Local Transport: All in-country ground travel, including scheduled group pick-up and drop-off at Bucharest Airport (OTP).
Meals & Catering: Full board coverage (breakfast, lunch, and dinner cooked fresh daily aboard our floating base).
Permits & Fees: All Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve entry permits, visitor fees, and boat access licences.
Pre-Trip Prep: A group video briefing call one month prior to departure to review gear selection, clothing, and travel logistics.

Flights: International flights to and from Bucharest Airport (OTP).
Drinks: Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks outside of provided meals.
Insurance: Mandatory personal travel and photographic equipment insurance.
Gear: Personal camera bodies, telephoto lenses, and outdoor clothing.
What You Will Need:
Camera Gear
Camera Body: Your preferred DSLR or mirrorless body. A secondary backup body is strongly recommended to protect against water spray and avoid changing lenses in humid, waterborne environments. While a bridge camera can work for most shots, you may struggle with low-light and quick-paced action photography.
Primary Telephoto Lens: A lens with a focal length of 500mm or 600mm, or a long telephoto zoom (such as a 100–400mm or 200–600mm). Essential for distant White-tailed Eagles and skittish waterbirds across open water.
Mid-Range Zoom Lens: A 70–200mm (or equivalent) lens. Ideal for closer bird encounters along narrow willow channels and for framing environmental wildlife portraits that include the surrounding habitat.
Wide-Angle Lens (Optional): A standard wide-angle zoom (such as a 16–35mm or 24–70mm) for capturing expansive wetland landscapes, dramatic sky setups, and contextual shots of our floating hotel base.
Camera Support: A heavy-duty beanbag is the most effective tool for low-angle stability on the boat gunwales. Monopods can work in tight spaces, but tripods are clumsy on boat decks and strongly discouraged.
Protection & Power: A durable dry-bag to protect your setup from spray during transits, alongside plenty of fast memory cards and spare batteries for high-frame-rate action.
Storage (Optional): A laptop and external hard drive for daily file backups and taking part in our voluntary image editing feedback sessions on the floating hotel.
Field Clothing
Sun & Insect Protection: Lightweight, quick-dry, long-sleeved shirts and trousers in neutral, muted tones. High-factor sunscreen, polarised sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a reliable insect repellent are essential for long hours on exposed water.
Versatile Layers: August daytime temperatures in the Delta are warm, but early morning departures (05:30) on open water can feel surprisingly cool. Bring a light windproof jacket or fleece to layer up.
Fitness & Suitability
Boat Logistics: Photography is conducted almost entirely from our low-profile electric photo boat. You should be steady on your feet and comfortable stepping on and off boat decks safely.
Daily Rhythm: Field sessions are structured strictly around peak light, requiring early 05:30 departures paired with generous midday rest periods aboard our floating hotel base.
