Widely regarded as the wildlife capital of the UK, the Isle of Mull offers incredible opportunities for dedicated photographers, but getting clean shots requires strong fieldcraft and a flexible approach to Hebridean conditions.
On this tour, our time is split between land and sea. We’ll spend focused days along the coastline tracking Eurasian Otters, and head out on a private boat charter to witness the raw power of White-tailed Eagles in the sea lochs. We also dedicate two full days to the Isle of Lunga, where we’ve arranged to stay late into the evening - long after the day-trippers have left - to capture puffins and seabird colonies in the best possible light. Because we maintain a strict 1:3 guide-to-guest ratio in the field, you will get hands-on support to master the technical skills needed for these fast-moving subjects. To keep the experience entirely comfortable, every guest enjoys their own room in a beautiful cottage with absolutely no single supplement, and all meals are fully covered.
Itinerary:
(Note: Our exact daily schedule remains highly flexible. I adapt our routing dynamically to the weather, tides, and wildlife behaviour to ensure we are always shooting in the best possible conditions).
Day 1: Arrival Arrive at our cottage from 5:00 pm. We will settle into our rooms and sit down for a group meal to discuss our photographic targets for the week ahead.
Days 2–7: The Field Sessions I will structure our days entirely around the elements, ensuring we prioritise these core experiences throughout the week:
Isles of Lunga & Staffa: Two dedicated boat charters. We will stay on Lunga long after the day-trippers have left to make the most of the best light, heading back around 8:30 pm with dinner served on the journey home.
The Lady Jayne Charter: A private session on a specialist boat to photograph diving White-tailed Eagles at close quarters.
Coastal Otter Tracking: Multiple dedicated sessions on foot along the rocky coastlines and seaweed beds to locate and photograph otters.
Moorland Drives: Where the weather and our schedule allow, I will take us out in the evenings to track and photograph Short-eared Owls and Hen Harriers.
Day 8: Departure A final group breakfast before we pack up and depart the cottage by 10:00 am.

Mainland Travel – Your travel to and from the island itself (including your individual CalMac ferry tickets to Craignure).
Drinks – Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages outside of the provided meals.
Insurance – Personal travel and photographic equipment insurance (mandatory).
Gear – Personal camera equipment and outdoor clothing.
What You Will Need:
Camera Gear
Camera Body – Your preferred DSLR or mirrorless camera body. While a bridge camera can work for slower-paced or static shots, you will likely struggle to lock focus on high-action subjects like diving eagles or flying puffins.
Telephoto Lens – A lens with a focal length of 500mm or above is highly recommended. A versatile telephoto zoom is ideal for reacting quickly to sudden movements from the boat or shoreline.
Wide-Angle Lens – Useful to have in the bag for quick snapshots of the scenery or for capturing wide, environmental context shots of the seabird colonies on Lunga. We will not be focusing on formal landscape photography on this trip, but a wide lens is excellent for storytelling frames.
Support – A sturdy tripod or monopod for supporting your setup if you find handholding a long lens fatiguing during extended watches along the coast.
Media & Power – Plenty of spare batteries and fast memory cards to handle high-frame-rate action shooting, especially during our boat charters.
Storage (Optional) – A laptop and external hard drives for daily file backups and our informal image review sessions back at the cottage.
Field Clothing
Muted Colours – Your outer layers, jackets, and trousers should ideally be in muted, natural tones like greens, browns, or greys. This is a vital piece of fieldcraft for when we are out tracking otters along the shoreline; bright or high-visibility clothing will instantly give away our position.
Versatile Layers – Quality outdoor clothing that you can easily layer up or strip down. June in the Hebrides is notoriously unpredictable; you could easily find yourself shooting in a t-shirt during an unexpected heatwave or wrapped up tight against a biting coastal wind all in the same afternoon.
Waterproofs – A high-quality, fully waterproof jacket and trousers. Heavy downpours can catch us out on the coast or on the boats at any time, and you need to stay dry to stay sharp.
Footwear – Sturdy, fully waterproof hiking boots with excellent grip for safely navigating wet, slippery coastal rocks, thick kelp, and uneven moorland paths.
Midge Protection – A reliable insect repellent, a fine-mesh head net, and a light pair of gloves. Mull is usually windy enough to keep the infamous Highland midges grounded, but if the weather turns hot and the breeze drops to zero - especially when we are sitting completely motionless down on the seaweed waiting for an otter - they will find us.
Fitness & Suitability
Physical Terrain – Tracking otters along the Hebridean coastline requires a good level of physical stability and sure-footedness. We will be doing a fair amount of stop-start walking and moving across wet rocks, seaweed-covered shorelines, and uneven coastal ground.
Pacing & Hours – Our days are dictated entirely by the elements and wildlife patterns. You should be comfortable with long field sessions, including late-evening boat returns, and an itinerary that adapts to the light.
