BEAVER PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
East Kent
May 2027
Gliding silently along a stunning river in Kent at dusk to photograph one of Britain's greatest reintroduction success stories is a truly magical experience. On this unique evening workshop, we take to the water in canoes to venture deep into beaver territory, granting us an unparalleled, low-angle perspective right at water level. Because the boats are paddled for you, your hands are completely free to focus entirely on your compositions. Throughout the evening turning into twilight, we will watch these master engineers emerge to groom, feed, and swim right alongside us, offering an unforgettable evening of tracking wildlife in complete, serene silence.
Key Information:
Cost: £230 per person
Group size: max. 2 (larger group bookings available on request)
Duration: Approximately 3 hours (running from 6:30pm until sunset)
Location: East Kent
Dates: May 2027 (Specific block dates to be confirmed)
Fitness: Easy / Gentle
The Terrain & Accessibility: While this workshop requires zero walking or rough terrain to navigate, it does require the physical ability to sit relatively still in a canoe for up to three hours. To ensure total peace of mind on the water, we use two canoes securely rafted together. This creates an incredibly steady platform that completely eliminates any worry of tipping. However, because you will be seated on a plastic bench for the duration of the session, anyone with lower back or hip issues may find the positioning a little stiff. If you have any mobility or comfort concerns regarding boarding or sitting in a canoe, please get in touch before booking so we can chat through the setup.
Photography Level: All skill levels are welcome, but complete beginners may find this session quite tough. We will be shooting from a moving canoe (unless we have found a suitable spot to safely moor up) in rapidly fading evening light, which requires pushing your equipment to its limits with high ISOs and slower handheld shutter speeds than usual. Because beavers have incredibly acute hearing, this workshop requires near-total silence once we are out on the water. To set you up for success, we will do a thorough technical briefing on the riverbank before we launch, getting your low-light parameters completely dialled in so you feel confident reacting quickly as the twilight deepens.
What Will You Need:
Camera: Your favourite DSLR or Mirrorless camera.
Lenses: A focal length of at least 400mm (250mm APS-C, 200mm Micro 4/3) is recommended, ideally with the of a 1.4x TC. A 100-400mm or 150-600mm would also work well. Depending on the weather it can get dark where the beavers are, so a "fast" lens would be ideal, but it is not a necessity, so please don’t be scared of high ISO images.
Binoculars: Not a necessity, but very handy for spotting ripples further down the river before the mammals show themselves.
Support: Whilst I would recommend hand holding for maximum flexibility, a monopod would be useful if you have a large, heavy lens.
Carrying Your Kit: Please feel free to bring all of your camera kit with you into the canoe (ideally in a camera bag) as there is plenty of space for your gear.
Extra equipment: Spare batteries and extra SD cards.
Clothing & Food: Warm layers and a windproof jacket. It can feel surprisingly chilly out on the water once the sun sets, so bringing an extra fleece is highly recommended. Because you will be seated on a plastic bench for around three hours, the seats can start to feel quite hard; I highly recommend bringing a small travel cushion or a foam pad to sit on (though I can provide a spare buoyancy aid for you to use as extra padding if needed). Please feel free to bring a bottle of water, but leave any loud, crinkly snack packets at home to avoid spooking the wildlife.
Good To Know:
Weather: The workshop will go ahead in light rain, as beavers are completely unfazed by wet weather. However, because we are operating in open canoes, very heavy, persistent rain or strong winds that create rough river conditions will force us to reschedule for safety. If we do have to cancel, I will look to re-book you onto an alternative date during that specific run of workshops. If that isn't possible, your payment will be issued as a credit voucher to use toward any future workshop or tour booking.
Meeting Point: To protect the locations and the privacy of the river access, I don't publish the exact meeting spot publicly. Around 2–4 weeks before your session, I will send you a detailed pre-workshop email with the precise parking info and a pin drop for our meeting point. If you are travelling from further away and need to book accommodation ahead of time, please feel free to drop me an email and I can give you some pointers on the best areas to look.
Parking: There is free kerbside parking available around a 200m walk away from the meeting point.
Facilities: There are basic toilet facilities available at the launch site before we get into the canoes, but please note there are no facilities once we are out on the water for the 3-hour session.
Supporting Local Wildlife: £10 from every single booking goes directly to Kent Wildlife Trust’s Nature Regeneration Fund to help support their vital work restoring natural habitats, reintroducing keystone species, and driving large-scale landscape recovery across Kent.
The Post-Workshop Print: Every session includes a free, high-quality 8" x 12" print of your favourite photo from our evening together. After the workshop, you can choose your image and I’ll print and post it directly out to you.
Other Species We May Encounter: Kingfishers, Cuckoos, Herons and various waterfowl.
